Byzantine Icon Painting evolved from the ancient Egyptian Fayum portraits, as a way to depict the people and the stories of the books of the Bible. One such book was Revelation, written by St. John on the island of Patmos, where our course will be held.
Course outline:
- Sketch the design on paper, prepare the wood surface, trace the design on to the prepared wood.
- Apply the gold leaf for the background and the halo.
- Mix the specific paints and apply them using special brush strokes.
- Learn the different lighting and shading techniques.
- Focus on the facial and body characteristics.
- Write the name of the Saint, King or Angel in Byzantine letters and apply the lacquer.
The course will be studio based with excursions to churches and monasteries. All materials and equipment will be provided.
We provide:
Desktop easels, wooden canvas, gold leaf, specialised paints, brushes, paper, theory booklet, lacquer, various other materials and equipment used during the course.
